Angry protesters from New York to Alaska assail Trump and Musk in 'Hands Off!' rallies

By Dave Collins

Crowds of people angry about the way President Donald Trump is running the country marched and rallied in scores of American cities Saturday in the biggest day of demonstrations yet by an opposition movement trying to regain its momentum after the shock of the Republican’s first weeks in office.

So-called Hands Off! demonstrations were organized for more than 1,200 locations in all 50 states by more than 150 groups, including civil rights organizations, labor unions, LBGTQ+ advocates, veterans and elections activists. The rallies appeared peaceful, with no immediate reports of arrests.

Thousands of protesters in cities dotting the nation from Midtown Manhattan to Anchorage, Alaska, including at multiple state capitols, assailed Trump and billionaire Elon Musk 's actions on government downsizing, the economy, immigration and human rights. On the West Coast, in the shadow of Seattle's iconic Space Needle, protesters held signs with slogans like “Fight the oligarchy.” Protesters chanted as they took to the streets in Portland, Oregon, and Los Angeles, where they marched from Pershing Square to City Hall.

Demonstrators voiced anger over the administration's moves to fire thousands of federal workers, close Social Security Administration field offices, effectively shutter entire agencies, deport immigrants, scale back protections for transgender people and cut funding for health programs.

Musk, a Trump adviser who runs Tesla, SpaceX and the social media platform X, has played a key role in the downsizing as the head of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency. He says he is saving taxpayers billions of dollars.

Asked about the protests, the White House said in a statement that “President Trump’s position is clear: he will always protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for eligible beneficiaries. Meanwhile, the Democrats’ stance is giving Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare benefits to illegal aliens, which will bankrupt these programs and crush American seniors.”

Kelley Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign advocacy group, criticized the administration's treatment of the LBGTQ+ community at the rally at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where Democratic members of Congress also took the stage.

“The attacks that we’re seeing, they’re not just political. They are personal, y’all,” Robinson said. “They’re trying to ban our books, they’re slashing HIV prevention funding, they’re criminalizing our doctors, our teachers, our families and our lives.”

“We don’t want this America, y’all,” Robinson added. “We want the America we deserve, where dignity, safety and freedom belong not to some of us, but to all of us.”

In Boston, demonstrators brandished signs such as “Hands off our democracy” and “Hands off our Social Security.”

Mayor Michelle Wu said she does not want her children and others' to live in a world in which threats and intimidation are government tactics and values like diversity and equality are under attack.

“I refuse to accept that they could grow up in a world where immigrants like their grandma and grandpa are automatically presumed to be criminals,” Wu said.

Roger Broom, 66, a retiree from Delaware County, Ohio, was one of hundreds who rallied at the Statehouse in Columbus. He said he used to be a Reagan Republican but has been turned off by Trump.

“He’s tearing this country apart,” Broom said. “It’s just an administration of grievances.”

Hundreds of people also demonstrated in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, a few miles from Trump's golf course in Jupiter, where he spent the morning at the club's Senior Club Championship. People lined both sides of PGA Drive, encouraging cars to honk and chanting slogans against Trump.

“They need to keep their hands off of our Social Security,” said Archer Moran of Port St. Lucie, Florida.

“The list of what they need to keep their hands off of is too long,” Moran said. “And it's amazing how soon these protests are happening since he’s taken office.”

The president golfed in Florida Saturday and planned to do so again Sunday, the White House said.

Activists have staged nationwide demonstrations against Trump and Musk multiple times since Trump returned to office. But before Saturday the opposition movement had yet to produce a mass mobilization like the Women's March in 2017, which brought thousands of women to Washington after Trump's first inauguration, or the Black Lives Matter demonstrations that erupted in multiple cities after George Floyd's killing by police in Minneapolis in 2020.

In Charlotte, North Carolina, protesters said they were supporting a variety of causes, from Social Security and education to immigration and women's reproductive rights.

“Regardless of your party, regardless of who you voted for, what’s going on today, what’s happening today is abhorrent,” said Britt Castillo, 35, of Charlotte. "It’s disgusting, and as broken as our current system might be, the way that the current administration is going about trying to fix things — it is not the way to do it. They’re not listening to the people."

Among thousands marching through downtown San Jose, California, were Deborah and Douglas Doherty.

Deborah, a graphic designer, is a veteran of the 2017 Women’s March and was nervous that fewer people have turned out against Trump this time. “All the cities need to show up,” she said. “Now people are kind of numb to it, which is itself frightening.”

Anti Trump, Musk, any head sporting a Red Trump MAGA Hat in public.

Good bless America, It appears democracy is very much safe and secure, up, down the country.

Protest away, after all, it is your right to do so, chose a glorious day to huff puff and get angry.

Saw some protests today driving, people honking in support. Made me happy there's people being so upfront about their anger. I live in a deeply republican area too. It's nice to see everyone's angry with him.

Nice, people rise up against this crazy president and his collaborators. Trump's trade war will back fire on his own and a big chaos in America is coming , pity for those low income people and those federal staffs who lost their jobs suddenly but that was caused my your own fellow people who voted Trump!

*For years America has been acting like a mesmerized nation of kissazz wimps. Taking anything that gets spoon-fed to them and saying 'yesssss-SIR!!!!'. That is and is not the America I defended during the latter Cold War years. *

Translation???

*I am GLAD GLAD GLAD to see resistance to this loudmouth screaming Hitler geek and his Muskrat boss and his Russian master. *

Well, libs can protest, protesting has always a been a cornerstone of American democracy, I protested with the tea party years ago, good to get out and let your voice be heard

He is a social/political/economic/etc. parasite of the lowest order, totally with no worth or redeemable qualities whatsoever. None. And I can find at least one positive trait about each and every POTUS before him, Biden too. Yes, even the infamous Nixon.

No, he’s none of that, but what he is and this is without dispute, is one of the biggest political disrupters since Roosevelt in U.S. history and that’s a good thing.

Now the question is, 'What's next?'. 4 more years of this evil is not acceptable, and Daughter-Molester Donnie is already talking about a 'third term' like he did before.

What does that even mean?

That's un-Constitutional, but everything he does is.

Something must change and it must change NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have to look at it like this, any executive that one President issues another can change, act now and make legislation to make it permanent, that’s what he’s doing now, so constitutionally he can do this, the left can get as many liberal activist judges to delay him, again “delay” him, but that’s all, once this gets to the Supreme Court, they will have to determine whether a sitting President has the power which was given to him by the people have the right to implement these policies, rules and changes which were given to him by the Constitution or can a district lower court can defy the executive, where is the limit? And you have to also remember, one day when the Democrats return back to power, Conservative judges can do the same, libs never think about their actions, cause and effect, their greedy and selfish actions in the Senate under then Harry Reid is what got us 3 conservative Supreme Court justices. So liberals really need to think what they’re doing because these things always come back to bite them in the end, being politically emotional will never help their cause which is another reason why they lost. Democrats need a message, resistance is not a message, it’s being defiant and defiance will not help their constituents in the future in any capacity. Tangible Ideas, policies, solutions will. That’s how you make change. Calling anyone you disagree with Hitler is just childish, has zero merit and does nothing to advance your agenda, being calm, reasonable, rational and pragmatic will. Food for thought.

I worry if these kinds of protests continue will Trump sign an EO claiming this is a threat to the national security and they have to be stopped! I wouldn't be surprised. He hates anything that makes him look bad!

9 ( +19 / -10 )

Back in Nov 2024 I said that Trump if elected would destroy the U.S. if not the whole world. Well he's doing it right before our eyes.

About time the stupid and mislead realized that putting Trump back in office again was a mistake. And none of all this is a surprise, he was saying it and the media was reporting it.

Time for the Republican party to put their monster out to pasture before there's no country left for them to control.

8 ( +18 / -10 )

Wonder why these folks are so upset?

Many are just lower and middle class folks - that have worked hard all their lives, contributed to Social Security, and saved a little for their retirement...many voted for Trump in 2024....

Now they are seeing their retirement savings go up in smoke, their Social Security threatened, and prices of everything skyrocketing...

And in all this chaos and economic meltdown, their President is doing this;

"President Donald Trump on Saturday urged Americans to "hang tough" and played a round of golf for the second consecutive day as his baseline 10% tariffs on imports from all U.S. trading partners went into effect.

After announcing the massive tariffs Wednesday, the U.S. stock market plummeted, with the Dow Jones industrial average losing 9.2%, the S&P 500 falling 10.5% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq tumbling 11.4%."

"Hang tough" my fellow Americans - while I take in 18 holes...

And we should note, he prefered to golf rather than attend a dignified transfer of remains of our military heroes who died in Lithuania...

If all of this doesn't drive you to take to the streets in protest, you might be a MAGA cult member...

11 ( +19 / -8 )

worry if these kinds of protests continue will Trump sign an EO claiming this is a threat to the national.....

Oh, well you should. The fundamental problem of this president is he doesn't understand politics or economy but he is in power the second time. He consider everyone living in this world were his employees working in his corporation that he can using the power of: "You are fired" at whoever for any reasons.

Let's see if the inflation became a hyperinflation and ordinary people can't bear the ridiculously high living cost that will make American society everyday is a war zone !

-2 ( +11 / -13 )

The Republicans will kick Trump out ?

The answer is : No !

The Republicans without Trump is nobody, they are the same like him. The only US president ever resigned was Richard Nixon, he did have some conscience when he knew his game is over. Donald Trump has none, he has greedy, ego and madness only. America is having a very big trouble and the longer this chaos persist will only benefiting the rise of China. The whole world is watching America's daily embarrassing political drama !

-3 ( +11 / -14 )

Lots of these should line up at the Bank and withdraw their money as a protest against billionaires and watch Trump go.insane

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

It's nice to see, but given that (or so it appears) the republicans / Project 2025 guys basically control the judiciary and justice department, I can't see anything coming of it.

The US needs a hard reset, and it will take more than protests to do it.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Well, Trump has done one thing good. He's united Democrats and Republicans against him. I know it only took a hit to their wallets, 401k hits, and loss of financial benefits to bring about MAGA and Republicans, but I guess better late than never, although they have themselves to blame for voting this destroyer in.

Of course, on the state regime TV called Fox, they're trying to spin things like "You don't need your 401k" and "social security is a scam; you're better off without it". Of course the rich people can probably live without benefits like those.

Trump has now caused more economic uncertainty than what Covid-19 did back in 2020. If the volatility of the economy keeps going in the trajectory it is, it will soon hit the effect of the 2008 financial crisis.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

As if we needed more evidence that Trump's suck-ups and cronies are a bunch of cowardly hypocrites, just look at these comments they made in the past WRT tariffs....

Sen Marco Rubio: The first clip features then-Senator Rubio condemning tariffs as "a tax on Americans" during his 2015 presidential campaign. He later suspended his campaign after losing the Florida Republican primary to Donald Trump. "A tariff isn't paid by the exporter. China's not going to pay the tariff. The buyer is going to pay the tariff," he continued.

Sen Ted Cruz: Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said "tariffs would kill jobs all across this country".

Sen. Ron Johnson: Generalized tariffs would harm allies and American consumers. He added that no one wins a trade war because "there's so much collateral damage, and it's a very risky and dangerous strategy."

Sen Lindsey Graham: "China wins when we fight with Europe. China wins when the American consumers have higher prices because of tariffs that don't affect Chinese behavior."

Now? "We love tariffs"...

Just a bunch of lying, craven, spineless MAGA flip-floppers...

12 ( +15 / -3 )

Gee, I remember a time I could get up in the morning and not worry about a self-inflicted financial crisis, worrying that people would be losing their jobs, and their benefits. I remember the image of the cover of one issue of the magazine "The Economist" showing a wad of hundred dollar bills being launched, with the title "The Envy of the World" to describe the American Economy at the time. I think that issue came out in October of last year, if I'm not mistaken. What happened since then?

As a GS the utter waste I have personally witnessed and my calls w/ ( are you coming in today) & ( na, working from home).( But, I will be in the meeting (in teams). Like being in a goverment meeting was an option. LOL.

This tactic of getting out of job you were hired to do by the American tax payer, is played, played, played, out so bad. It just got old.

No way the goverment could have sustained.

DOGE-

The team provided a fresh update on its progress toward this lofty goal on Wednesday. In an update to the “Savings” section of the team’s official website, DOGE claimed to have saved an estimated $115 billion, up $10 billion from the week before. They say this equates to $714 saved per taxpayer.

According to DOGE’s website, the savings are a combination of “asset sales, contract/lease cancellations and renegotiations, fraud, and improper payment deletion, grant cancellations, interest savings, programmatic changes, regulatory savings, and workforce reductions.”

Thats me. I pay taxes. Keep up the good work. Its slightly uncomfortable now. But the worm will turn.

What's your point? Dems aren't free traders necessarily, and targeted tariffs can be effective to achieve a goal. I have never supported them, but I can see why some Dems did.

Now, nobody, GOP nor Dem has ever supported tariffs across the board, because they don't work and the last time it was tried it exacerbated the Great Depression.

It may be unlikely the two stooges in question will take these protest "on board " but will revert to such psyche saving methods illustrated on the Psychology Graph..."The Compass of Sham "

My guess it will be the "attack others " aspect of the graph, not even listening to any grievances, however justified.

What is important is that non protesting Americans can see the issues being raised, with such passion, in these demonstrations, and it may give THIS cohort, a time to pause and reflect.

Extensive fraud over the last 4 years takes more than 2 months to gather and prosecute, my man.

No it doesn't. If DOGE had found any clear fraud, it would at least end up with immediate charges being filed. leading to an investigation. The prosecution could take time, but not the actual formal accusation. There's none of that. So, again, either you are lying and there is no fraud, or DOGE and the DOJ are extremely incompetent. Which is it?

Won't be long before the autocratic takeover is complete and then Trump will turn the police and courts on his opponents as he said he would. @Black,

"Reminder that the S&P crashed 21% under Joe Biden in just the first 6 months of 2022.

a 2 day (so far) manipulation isn’t a big deal."

still and always denying the facts?

Well here you go:

Biden's term began with the tail-end of the post-Covid bull market in 2021. It included a bear market in 2022 but also back-to-back gains of 24% and 28% in 2023-'24 in the S&P 500.

President Joe Biden has left the White House with the S&P 500 up more than 55% and the Nasdaq composite up about 46% since he took office.

The best-performing major index under President Biden's leadership was the S&P 500, with a 55.7% gain through the last trading session in his term on Friday. The Nasdaq composite had a 45.9% increase, followed by a 39.4% lift in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Musk is already leaving the administration has Trump terminates his special employee status. He didn't reach the level of DOGE savings that was expected at the start. I think about $8 billion to days. He'll still have his many lucrative government contracts.

Musk is already leaving the administration has Trump terminates his special employee status.

When his time is up, he will, but that doesn't mean the department is going away, that won't and he made that clear, so the hunt for waste and fraud will still thankfully continue.

He didn't reach the level of DOGE savings that was expected at the start.

Actually, more than he expected, but he still says, more needs to be done and I feel relieved about that

I think about $8 billion to days. He'll still have his many lucrative government contracts.

As he should.

How bad must the "other team" have been for the masses to vote in team Trump. He is only doing pretty much what he promised to do.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

always been fraud in Social Security, it’s ongoing.

Oh you're only talking about social security now? I thought there was massive fraud at USAID? The HHS? The FDA? Everywhere DOGE cut contracts and fired people. It's actually just social security?

If you just want to talk about the SS, of course there has always been fraud in it. (Even in Japan you find people still getting checks for their deceased family members.) But not to the extent DOGE is lying about it. There are no "millions of dollars going to people over 150 years old".

There is.

Stock market rout deepens as Dow plunges more than 2,200 points and Nasdaq enters bear market

I remember Trump once said that if the stocks plunge significantly under that president, that he or she should be impeached. Trump should stand by his word then.

In fact, today's freefall has wiped 2.7 trillion dollars off the market value from the index. Very serious stuff. At least back in 2020, there was Covid to blame.

I'm sorry, I tend to ignore the Trump-hating economists

They didn't actually calculate tariff rates + non-tariff barriers, as they say they did. Instead, for every country, they just took our trade deficit with that country and divided it by the country's exports to us.

So we have a $17.9 billion trade deficit with Indonesia. Its exports to us are $28 billion. $17.9/$28 = 64%, which Trump claims is the tariff rate Indonesia charges us. What extraordinary nonsense this is.

So you mean this is all wrong. Please share your math and refute it.

the left do it to me, and I am a nice guy.

Who claims to be "so happy that the left are unemployed?" I suppose you must come across a bit better in person because you'd never have the nerve to actually say anything that crass and offensive to someone who'd just lost their job.

> They said those people still listed as “active” in the system. Meaning someone ELSE (who isn’t dead) could be paid fraudulently.

Except they are not.

Waiting for the Trump tariff supporters to eventually say that all the economic problems encountered due to the tariffs were the fault of the Democrats.

good thing they didn’t say that.

Donald Trump did.

The problem with Trump's tariff war, is that sometimes he says it's a way to bring manufacturing back to America, but sometimes he's saying it's a way to force other countries to negotiate. Which is it? Companies who see Trump using it as a negotiating tactic, will not invest in building manufacturing plants in the U.S. for fear that Trump will stop the tariffs. Companies know that it will take at least 5 years minimum. In any case, companies would likely switch to automation anyway, to cut costs, or they may have to raise wages to hire American people to entice them to work those jobs, but that would mean an increase in retail prices.

With all this fraud going on, how come no one has been arrested?

It looks like $11 trillion lost on 401K’s, pension funds and for shareholders since the inauguration. That’s like $1 trillion per week. Haha.

Deportations are getting close to the numbers from the last administration. The last marketing event announcing arrests failed to mention that 50% were already in custody.

No more data available on bird flu, measles outbreaks, etc. Gotta people in the dark about that stuff.

Not a single cabinet member is qualified. Not one. Just a bunch of yes men and women.

Think back to the photos of Trump rallies and the people who were there. People who got mostly D’s in high school, if they got that far.

36% of registered Republicans still don’t understand how tariffs work.

I’ve been around since Truman was leaving office and I can’t ever remember demonstrations within months of president taking office.

Lotta people upset with Trump. Are they worried he's going to run for a third term?

Probably should focus on finding a candidate that will do better.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Trump is the cause of the market downturn.

In 2022, it was COVID still ending (after Trump screwed America on COVID response) and Russian invasion - both external causes.

Even MAGA voters want a President to seem to care about them and he needs to do things to make the economy grow. If he needs to do something negative, do it slowly, in a planned, announced, way, so companies aren't caught without plans.

Trump is a tornado-manager. He shows up, orders actions without careful thought BEFORE and doesn't care that the immediate results are like an F5 tornado ripping through a company/country. We need a President who will lean towards changes like a gentle rain that lasts for a week, takes a pause to avoid flooding, then starts up for another week, pause, repeat until the final goal is achieved and modifications can be made along the way.

@Ihaveseenfootage -

No people 150 old are NOT getting a SS check.

Social Security is an old Cobol system and if the Birth date is left empty, then you get this weird age. SS does not require date of birth and also it could be the spouse of a dead recipient.

SS asked the Congress for $9 million to upgrade the system and Congress did not approve.

President DJT is the one anointed to remove you all from the previous messes but rather than help the Dems keeps on frustrating him. The more you prolong with your objections the longer the pain.

Please answer the question. What policies would they run on?

Not being 47 and attempting to undo the damage he is doing.

As a supporter you will never see it but half the country see him and the current Republican Party as toxic and it’s getting g worse daily.

No approval polls to share today? How odd.

I asked you a perfectly legitimate question, how would the Dems gain seats given their growing unpopularity and lack of policies? Please answer the question. What policies would they run on?

They will run on not tanking the economy like dumb pieces of stuffing.

The flaw in the Trump "tariff 'em all" approach is that he didn't take into account US treasury bond purchases. Countries aren't giving us stuff for nothing: they are holding US dollars and treasury bonds. To punish them for doing so is a recipe for disaster.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Peaceful protests fine, but most voted for DJT change, did not like Biden Admin path of fiscal disaster due to excessive Govt. spending, much of it wasteful, inefficient and/or corrupt, endless costly forever wars or lousy trade relations which cost Americans wealth and jobs.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

Majority in US like direction of the country now, first time in decades after all-time lows just months ago under Biden Admin, where 75% or more felt the direction poor.

Change takes time, DJT policies will put US on a much better and more peaceful prosperous path than Biden train wreck if inflation and wars.
